About Chicago Artist’ Month

The 2011 theme, Artful Networks, explores the communities that nurture and inspire Chicago artists and their work. The people with whom artists choose to work can be supportive in encouraging creative growth, experimentation, dialogue among peers, and community building. Ranging from traditional residency programs to collaboratives to informal relationships, our communities impact the way we create, support, and appreciate art. http://www.chicagoartistsmonth.org/

Cornelia Arts Building – A Network of Artists

The Cornelia Arts Building will participate in Chicago Artists’ Month 2011 – featuring our tri-annual Open House, over 40 artists practice a diverse range of art-making in our Ravenswood studio building. Cornelia is an example of a community driven network of artists who work collaboratively to promote their own artwork, and that of their peers, as well as highlighting the importance of maintaining working studio space for artists. The only all-artist studio building on the Northside of Chicago, we regularly open our building to the public providing and engaging and educational look at the creative process from the inside. We hope that you will join us this October 1st and 2nd for our open house in conjunction with Chicago Artists’ Month and the 10th annual Ravenswood ArtWalk.

Artful Networks

This year’s theme, “Artful Networks,”explores the communities that nurture and inspire Chicago artists and their work.  The people with whom artists choose to work can be supportive in encouraging creative growth, experimentation, dialogue among peers, and community building.  Ranging from traditional residency programs to collaboratives to informal relationships, our communities impact the way we create, support and appreciate art.  In celebration of the Alliance of Artists Communities’ 20th Anniversary Conference, which takes place in Chicago from October 19 to 22, Chicago Artists Month 2011 looks at the various ways artists in Chicago are influenced by their social environments.

Nancy Charak exhibits at Wishbone this July

Nancy Charak displays watercolors this July at Wishbone Restaurant, 3300 N. Lincoln (at School), Chicago. Nancy makes watercolors, paintings and drawings in a studio in Roscoe Village, lives in Lakeview and is a lifelong Chicagoan.
My function as an artist is not to tell the truth — it is to captivate viewers for as long as I can hold their attention. It is not necessary for the artwork to be any more than what it is. What is necessary is for the art to flow from inside and to allow the paintings and drawings to spring from my entire set of experiences and sensibilities as an artist. My current favorite giants, to name just the women, are Agnes Martin and Joan Mitchell for the purity of their thought and action on the canvas as well as Linda Karshan, Sandra Blow, Vija Celmins, and Katherina Grosse. Whether what they do is lyrical, expository or just plain brash, to my way of thinking they are all pure abstract expressionists who make marks, lines, shapes, colors on paper, canvas, even buildings, and say to us, “ here look at this, make of it what you will.
A prolific artist and arts blogger, your can see and read more about Nancy’s work on her website and blog.
Wishbone is located at 3300 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago.

Scott Simons work showcased in House Beautiful June 2011

Scott Simons, an artist at the Cornelia Arts Building, was chosen from over 100 artists as one of the 4 winners of the Ravenswood Pink Walk sponsored by House Beautiful. Scott created a “pink themed” painting specifically for the event. Scott’s artwork, along with a mention of my website, appear in a 2 page spread in the June 2011 issue of the magazine.
I work with acrylic and enamel paint to create both traditional abstract paintings as well as mixed-media pieces incorporating wood, metal, string and other found items. All pieces are painted on wood.
Visit Scott’s website at http://scootstudios.com/.
